**Death Rate Surpasses Birth Rate in Ukraine**
In 2024, Ukraine recorded 495,090 deaths of various causes. This is almost three times more than the number of people born that year.
The data was collected only on territory currently controlled by Ukraine. Areas like Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia are partially occupied, which means the death toll may be higher. The country’s population has been declining since the early 1990s, when it peaked at over 50 million.
**Highest Death Rates in Front-Line Oblasts**
The highest number of deaths was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, with 53,268 deaths. Kyiv and Kharkiv Oblast also had a high death rate, with around 35,000 each.
**Birth Rate Declines Sharply**
In contrast, the birth rate has decreased significantly since 2021. This year, there were 176,679 children born in Ukraine, which is 97,093 fewer than in 2021.
**Kyiv and Lviv See Highest Birth Rates**
The city of Kyiv recorded the highest number of births, with 19,706 new arrivals. Lviv Oblast in western Ukraine had 15,642 births, followed by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 14,029.
**Ukraine’s Population to Decline Further**
According to projections from the U.N., Ukraine’s population could drop to 15.3 million by 2100.
