Suspected War Criminal Appointed to Government Position in Russia
A former Russian army commander accused of war crimes has been appointed to a government position. Nursultan Mussagaleyev was named acting deputy minister for regional and information policy in Orenburg Oblast.
Mussagaleyev is suspected of participating in the occupation of Bucha, a suburb near Kyiv, in 2022. He allegedly took part in “purge operations” to suppress resistance and intimidate civilians. Hundreds of people were killed in Bucha during this time.
The Ukrainian government has documented over 1,400 civilian killings in the Bucha District. Many of these victims were executed or buried in mass graves. Mussagaleyev was honored by Russia’s military and political leadership after the war.
His appointment to a government position is part of a broader trend in Russia. The country often rewards military personnel linked to war crimes with prestigious roles in civilian administration.
