The Georgian Dream (GD) parliament has approved amendments to its rules of procedure. The changes include provisions that affect the status of institutions operating within the parliament. This comes as protests continue in Georgia against the GD government.
**Commission to Investigate UNM Crimes**
Davit Matikashvili, chairman of the committee on procedural issues and rules of the Georgian Dream parliament, has announced that the commission tasked with investigating the “crimes” of the former United National Movement (UNM) government will be partially staffed. He warned that refusal to cooperate with the commission would result in criminal liability.
**Police Brutality Against Protesters**
Reports have emerged of police forcing protesters, including Kristine Botkoveli (a.k.a. Nancy Woland), to strip naked during searches. Former public defender Tamar Chugoshvili condemned this behavior as a “manifestation of state terrorism”.
**Opposition Coalition Calls for Renouncing Parliamentary Mandates**
Mamuka Khazaradze, leader of the opposition coalition Strong Georgia, has called on Giorgi Gakharia’s Party to renounce its parliamentary mandates. He argued that isolating the GD government internationally and internally would put them in their place legally.
**Unofficial Death Toll in Ukraine Rises**
The foreign ministry confirmed that two more Georgian citizens, Davit Dvalshvili and Mamuka Beria, were killed while fighting in Ukraine. This brings the unofficial death toll of Georgian citizens who have died fighting in Ukraine since the Russian invasion to 65.
**European Leaders Criticize GD Government**
High Representative/Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos condemned the GD government’s new wave of repressive legislation. They called on the government to release all journalists, activists, and political detainees.
**Council of Europe Chief Regrets Non-Cooperation with Joint Working Group**
Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset expressed regret over the Georgian Dream authorities’ decision not to participate in a joint working group to amend the Foreign Agents Law. This move has been criticized as further proof of the GD government’s disregard for democratic standards.
**New Organization Aims to Facilitate Peaceful Solution**
The founding congress of the “Georgian Public Assembly” took place at Theatre Factory 42, officially establishing the organization. The assembly aims to facilitate a peaceful and strategic solution to the current crisis and return Georgia to the path of a democratic republic, constitutional state, and European integration.
