**Ukraine‘s Kursk Incursion Foils Russian Plans**
President Volodymyr Zelensky has credited Ukraine’s offensive into Russia’s Kursk Oblast with preventing large-scale operations in northeastern and southern Ukraine. The incursion, which began in August 2024, aimed to create a buffer zone around key cities like Kharkiv and Sumy.
**Ukrainian Forces Advance**
Despite losing some territory since the initial capture of about 1,300 square kilometers of Russian land, Ukrainian forces have recently advanced 2.5 kilometers in the region. Zelensky described this as “one of our most successful operations.”
**Preventing a Southern Offensive**
The Kursk incursion also prevented Russia from launching a southern offensive against Ukraine, according to Zelensky. He claims that Russian forces were planning to attack Zaporizhzhia, but were forced to redirect troops to Kursk Oblast instead.
