Swiss Parliament Acknowledges Genocidal Nature of 1930s Famine in Ukraine

According Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, the National Council, the lower house of the Swiss , has officially recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide. The Holodomor was man-made famine that occurred in , resulting in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians. It is widely believed to have been orchestrated by the regime under Joseph in an effort to collectivize agriculture and suppress Ukrainian nationalism.

Stefanchuk stated that the declaration acknowledges the deliberate and systematic starvation of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group as an act of genocide. He called it a historic decision and an important step towards restoring and honoring the memory of the victims. The declaration was approved by the Swiss Parliament with 123 in favor, 58 against, and 7 abstentions.

The declaration notes that approximately four million Ukrainians, two million Kazakhs, and hundreds of thousands of Russians died during the famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. It specifically states that the National Council recognizes the deliberate and systematic actions that lead to mass famine as an act of genocide, with the intention of destroying a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group in whole or in part.

The Holodomor has been recognized as genocide by the parliaments of around countries, as well as the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. This recognition serves as an important acknowledgement of the suffering and loss endured by the Ukrainian people during this tragic event.
