On September 24, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that he is working towards ensuring that Ukraine is well-equipped to face Russia in their ongoing conflict, especially as the winter months approach. While Lammy did not confirm whether the U.K. would allow Ukraine to use British long-range precision weapons to strike inside Russia, he acknowledged that Iran’s supply of ballistic missiles to Moscow has escalated the situation.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has been requesting permission to use British Storm Shadow missiles and U.S.-made ATACMS to target deeper within Russia, but a decision was postponed by U.S. President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during their meeting on September 13. Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Lammy stated that he did not want to give Russian President Vladimir Putin any advantage, but emphasized the importance of putting Ukraine in a strong position as winter approaches, according to AFP.
The U.K. has consistently shown strong support for Ukraine and has pledged a total of £12.8 billion (approximately $16.2 billion) in assistance, with £7.8 billion (around $9.9 billion) allocated for military aid and £5 billion (approximately $6.3 billion) designated for non-military support. Lammy’s comments came after his speech at the U.N. Security Council, where he condemned Russia’s actions and accused them of violating international law and targeting civilian infrastructure.
