Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko recently claimed that any attack on Belarus would result in World War III, following Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s proposal to update Russia’s nuclear doctrine. Putin suggested changes during a Security Council meeting on nuclear deterrence, stating that Russia could respond to conventional missile strikes with nuclear weapons and would treat any attack backed by a nuclear-armed country as a coordinated assault. Lukashenko thanked Putin for this move and warned that an attack on Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia as well. He also accused NATO countries of deploying troops on the border with Belarus and stated that his country is prepared to defend itself. Russia’s decision to modify its nuclear doctrine is believed to be a response to discussions in the U.S. and U.K. about allowing Ukraine to launch conventional Western missiles into Russian territory. While Belarus does not have nuclear weapons, it is alleged that Russia has moved some of its nuclear arsenal to the country.
