The United Nations is facing a major problem with funding for its efforts to help Ukrainians this winter. According to Suspilne, more than half of Ukraine‘s power generation capacity has been destroyed, making it difficult to provide aid to those in need.
To address this issue, UNHCR is working with Ukrainian organizations to provide support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable groups. However, with winter approaching, the agency reports that only 47% of the necessary funds have been received.
Caroline Lindholm Billing, a representative of UNHCR, expressed concern over the low level of funding at this critical time. She revealed that last year, the program was 70% funded at the same time, highlighting the severity of the current situation.
According to Billing, there are approximately 3.6 million IDPs in Ukraine, and the situation is made worse by ongoing attacks on infrastructure and increased Russian military activity, resulting in more people being displaced. In fact, since August 1st, almost 99,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the Donetsk Oblast.
The funding crisis is particularly challenging as Ukraine’s power infrastructure has been severely impacted, with over half of its electricity production capacity destroyed. This makes it even more difficult to provide aid to those in need during the harsh winter months.
