Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, has announced his resignation on September 28, 2024. He stated that he will be returning to the private sector after four years of serving in the ruling party.
Amilakhvari thanked Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and GD patron Bidzina Ivanishvili for their support and stated that he will continue to support the party from outside politics. He also expressed his confidence in the Georgian Dream party’s victory in the upcoming October elections.
The Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, stated that Amilakhvari’s departure is a significant loss for the government and the ruling party. However, no replacement for the Education Minister has been announced yet.
Amilakhvari joined the ruling Georgian Dream party in 2020 and served as a GD MP in the tenth convocation of the Parliament. He was also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science. In March 2023, he was appointed as the Minister of Education.
During his tenure, Amilakhvari’s education plans were marked by a shift towards a more nationalistic and conservative ideology. This has been seen as a controversial move by some.
Recently, another GD minister, Tea Tsulukiani of the Ministry of Culture, also resigned. She stated that she will be standing as a candidate in the upcoming elections.
