**Ireland Increases Financial Support for Ukraine**
The Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, has promised that the Republic of Ireland will give more financial support to Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia‘s invasion.
Speaking at a conference in Kiev, Mr. Martin said: “We do need to say more, we do need to spend more and we need to do more.” He added that Ireland would contribute more financially on all fronts and strengthen its commitment to supporting Ukraine.
The conference was held as part of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in attendance, along with other international leaders.
**No Reward for Russian Aggression**
Mr. Martin also stressed that Russia should not be rewarded for its actions. This message comes amidst controversy over US-Russia talks aimed at ending the three-year conflict.
In a separate statement, Mr. Martin paid tribute to Ukraine’s “heroic” defense efforts and pledged Ireland’s steadfast support. He said: “Today, we honour their heroic efforts to defend their country.”
**Support for Ukrainian Refugees**
The Republic of Ireland has been providing temporary protection to over 112,000 Ukrainian refugees since March 2022. The number of refugees living in Ireland was around 80,000 at the end of last year.
In an effort to support these refugees, a resettlement scheme was introduced shortly after the war began. While benefit payments for Ukrainians were initially set at €232 per week, this amount was reduced to €38.80 in December 2023.
