**Serbian Government Changes Higher Education Laws**
The Serbian government has adopted a new bill that changes the Law on Higher Education. The main change is that students who pay their own fees at state higher education institutions will now have to pay 50% less.
This means that instead of paying full tuition, these students will get some money back from the government. This change was one of the demands made by students and it’s a big increase in funding for them.
The new law also gives a bigger budget for higher education, which is an increase of 20%. This is about 12 billion dinars (or 1 euro = 117 dinars). The government has also promised to give more money to employees at state universities, with salaries starting from March this year. This will be an additional 5.7 billion dinars.
**What else does the new law do?**
The proposed amendments to the Law on Higher Education also aim to improve the quality and relevance of higher education in Serbia. They want universities to become more independent (autonomous) and to have stronger international connections.
**When will these changes happen?**
The Serbian Parliament is set to discuss these changes at a session starting from March 4, according to Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic. This means that students can expect classes to resume and exams to be held soon.
