**Hungarian PM Opposes Ukraine’s EU Membership**

Orban warned that Ukraine’s accession would “destroy” Hungary. He said it would harm Hungarian farmers and agriculture, and lead to increased crime in the country. He also expressed concerns about controlling the flow of people across the border with Ukraine.
**Long History of Opposition**
This is not the first time Orban has spoken out against Ukraine’s EU membership. He has long been a vocal critic of Western support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. In fact, he has repeatedly argued that military aid prolongs the war.
Orban has also maintained close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has amplified Kremlin narratives in Europe. This has led to tensions between Hungary and other EU countries.
**Hungary Uses Veto Power**
As a member of the EU, Hungary has used its veto power to block key decisions on Ukraine, including military aid and accession talks. The country has also demanded changes to EU sanctions on Russia before agreeing to renew them.
Ukraine applied for EU membership in 2022 and achieved candidate status quickly. Accession talks began in June 2024, with a target date of 2030 for Ukraine’s potential entry into the EU. However, unanimity among EU members is required for further progress, giving Hungary leverage to delay or block the process.
