Here are five ways that Russia is attempting to influence the 2024 US elections:
1. Funneling money to pro-Russian content: Federal officials have sanctioned RT executives after an investigation revealed that $10 million was funneled to a Tennessee firm for the creation of pro-Russian content. This tactic exposes one of Moscow’s sophisticated methods of interfering in elections.
2. Military attacks in Ukraine: In the Bakhmut sector, a Ukrainian brigade successfully thwarted a Russian motorcycle assault, destroying 8 out of 14 attacking vehicles. In Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian troops used captured defensive lines to repel a Russian mechanized attack.
3. Daily use of drones: In an unprecedented escalation, Russian forces launched Shahed drones over Ukraine every day in September. Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted 1,107 drones, highlighting the intensity of the conflict.
4. Frontline report: In Toretsk, intense fighting in high-rise buildings resulted in a Russian soldier falling to his death while attempting to escape via balconies. This report shows the ongoing violence and chaos in the region.
5. Losses of Russian Armed Forces: As of September 30, 2024, the Russian Armed Forces have suffered significant losses in personnel, tanks, artillery, aircraft, and other equipment since the beginning of the invasion. This highlights the toll of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In addition to these tactics, Russia is also attempting to circumvent sanctions and acquire advanced technology, such as anti-sabotage boat parts and an auto-targeting system for drones. There are also concerns about China‘s involvement in a peace initiative for Ukraine, with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urging NATO allies to support Ukraine’s own peace plan instead.
