Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) and Foreign Ministry worked together to evacuate 179 people from Lebanon on October 1st due to the increasing violence in the Middle East. This evacuation was prompted by Israel‘s ground invasion of southern Lebanon, which was part of their campaign against the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah. Prior to the invasion, Israel had been carrying out intense aerial attacks on Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people. In response, Iran launched a missile attack on an Israeli air base.
Following Israel’s ground invasion, the Foreign Ministry released a statement urging all parties to show restraint in order to prevent the conflict from escalating into a larger regional war. The successful evacuation of 179 people, including 134 Ukrainian citizens, was later announced by Ukraine. Among the evacuees were 112 adults, 22 children, and 45 people of other nationalities, including citizens of Poland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Moldova, Brazil, and Lebanon. The evacuation even included a dog and a cat.
This was not the first evacuation carried out by Ukraine in response to the tensions in the region. Since early August, a total of 234 people have been evacuated from Lebanon. The Foreign Ministry expressed their gratitude to Poland and SkyUp Airlines for their assistance in the operation.
