According to a report by ERR, Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur has announced that the Estonian government plans to purchase weapons from its own defense industry to assist Ukraine. This year, Estonia will provide military aid worth approximately 100 million euros, which is equivalent to 0.25% of the country’s gross domestic product. This policy will continue in the future, but the focus will shift towards utilizing products from Estonian defense enterprises.
Pevkur stated that Estonia wants to restructure its military assistance so that it primarily consists of products from its own defense industry. He explained that negotiations are currently underway with Ukraine to determine their specific needs and how Estonia can best help. The goal is to direct the money into the Estonian economy and defense industry.
The Estonian defense industry is capable of producing weapons worth more than 100 million euros per year. However, adjustments may need to be made to meet Ukraine’s specific requirements. Pevkur mentioned that once the list of priorities is received, state tenders can be organized. All Estonian companies that produce the necessary products will have the opportunity to participate in these tenders.
Pevkur also noted that all Estonian military products delivered to Ukraine so far have received positive feedback. These include battle situation analysis tools, drones from Threod Systems, military boats, and anti-drone rifles from Rantelon.
