**Amnesty International Concerned About Georgian Government‘s Actions**
The Georgian government is being criticized for passing laws that restrict people’s rights to protest and freedom of speech. Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International’s Regional Director, said in an interview that this is the most aggressive move he has seen.
According to Krivosheev, the government is tightening its control over public space. He mentioned that many parliaments have passed similar laws, but not on such a large scale and in so short a time. The new legislation restricts people’s right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
**Concerns Over Arrests and Detentions**
Krivosheev also expressed concern about the arrests and detentions of protesters. He said that those who are detained are being denied their right to a fair trial. The government, he added, is encouraging the police to take harsh action against protesters.
The police are selectively arresting people, Krivosheev said, and treating them brutally. He noted that there is a clear pattern – protesters are being arrested for simply taking part in demonstrations, regardless of whether they engaged in violence or broke the law.
**Investigations into Police Violence**
Krivosheev expressed skepticism about justice being served in investigating police violence. He said that it’s unlikely that those responsible will be held accountable because the authorities are the ones committing these crimes.
**Attacks on Journalists and Civil Society**
The government, Krivosheev added, is also attacking journalists and civil society organizations. He noted that journalists are being targeted more frequently than others and are often arrested or fined for doing their job.
