US Support for Ukraine in Doubt
The US has paused its intelligence sharing with Ukraine, according to National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. This is a significant development that comes as the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, continues to seek support from the international community.
Waltz confirmed on Wednesday that the US had taken a step back in terms of providing intelligence to Ukraine. He also stated that the Trump administration was reviewing “all aspects” of the relationship between the two countries.
French President Emmanuel Macron has responded to this development by calling for Europe to increase its defense spending. In a televised speech, he said that Europe must be prepared to move forward without US help if necessary.
Macron also announced a meeting of European army chiefs in Paris next week. He stated that France and Ukraine have developed a durable peace plan, which they hope will bring an end to the conflict.
US Intelligence Sharing Paused
The US has shared intelligence with Ukraine since the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. However, this support is now being put on hold due to tensions between President Zelensky and Donald Trump.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe appeared to confirm the decision in an interview on Fox Business on Wednesday. He stated that the pause was intended to give Ukraine a chance to think about its commitment to the peace process.
However, Waltz suggested that a more conciliatory tone is emerging between the US and Ukraine. He stated that the military aid and intelligence sharing pause could be lifted in the near future if negotiations progress positively.
Impact on the War
The decision to pause US support for Ukraine may have significant consequences on the battlefield. The information provided by the US has helped Ukraine both strategically and tactically, allowing them to make informed decisions about troop positions and military strategy.
Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense and retired CIA paramilitary officer, stated that cutting off intelligence to Ukraine “will have an immediate impact” on its ability to defend itself. He also warned that Russia may take advantage of the situation and push harder in their efforts to take more terrain from Ukraine.
