This has come as a surprise to Zelensky’s team, who are known for their smooth public relations. The visit was timed to gain support for Ukraine’s war efforts from President Joe Biden, but it also coincided with a heated US election campaign. After reports that Trump was ignoring Zelensky, the two finally met at Trump Tower in New York City. However, their encounter was awkward at times, with Trump equating his relationship with Zelensky to his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky hoped for a better relationship with Trump, but the president’s comments at rallies and on Fox News suggest that his fundamental approach towards Ukraine has not changed. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris criticized those who support Ukraine giving up land for peace, and Zelensky continued his diplomatic efforts at the United Nations.
