**Ukrainian Correspondent Fired from Voice of America**
A Ukrainian journalist, Ostap Yarysh, was let go from his job at the Voice of America (VoA) on March 7. This happened after an inspection by a group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
DOGE is a team led by billionaire Elon Musk that tries to reduce government spending and cut jobs. In the past, Musk has suggested shutting down US-funded media outlets like Radio Free Europe and Voice of America.
**Yarysh’s Experience**
Ostap Yarysh joined VoA’s Ukrainian service in 2019. He covered big events like Donald Trump‘s impeachment, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2020 presidential election. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, he reported on US aid to Ukraine.
**What Happened**
When news broke about his firing, Yarysh wrote on social media that he had ended his cooperation with VoA. He said he would share more details later.
Nataliia Ligachova, the head of Detector Media, also confirmed that Yarysh was let go during a DOGE inspection.
**Musk’s Views**
Elon Musk has previously called for shutting down public-funded media outlets. He thinks they waste US taxpayer money and spread left-wing views. In February, he said these outlets are like “radical left crazy people talking to themselves.”
**Investigation into Journalists**
The New York Times reported that the US Agency for Global Media is investigating journalists who spoke out against President Trump‘s policies. This includes senior VoA journalist Steve Herman, who was placed on extended leave.
Sources told The New York Times that in recent months, VoA had toned down or hidden coverage critical of Trump and his administration.
