From Entrepreneur to Leader: Inside Ukraine’s Deadly Drone Unit

Before the full-scale invasion by , , a 37-year-old successful entrepreneur from Dnipro, , was running a business management consultancy and a digital marketing firm. He enjoyed organizing electronic music parties, attending cultural events, and playing various . However, when the enemy came to Ukraine’s doorstep, Volkov knew he couldn’t just stand by. He had to take action.

As chaos and panic spread across Ukraine after the invasion, Volkov, like many others, was determined to contribute in any way he could. He remembered a friend who had a and decided to use it to patrol Dnipro and ensure nothing bad was happening. He quickly assembled a team of 8 operators and 8 drivers and created a group with over 100 members. The group was named Yasni Ochi, which means “Clear Eyes” in Ukrainian, and would eventually become one of Ukraine’s most effective drone units.

Yasni Ochi functioned like an “Uber for drones,” with the group dispatching operators to fly surveillance drones to specific areas requested by the . Volkov also approached the police to formalize the group’s operations, but they could not offer legal support. However, they encouraged the group to continue their efforts informally.

Through a mutual friend, Volkov connected with a soldier fighting on the front lines and was invited to get involved in drone warfare to inflict damage on the enemy. This invitation took him to the front lines, where he learned about the crucial role drones would play in the future of warfare.

Volkov posted in the , “I’m preparing to leave for the front—who’s coming with me?” A few brave volunteers responded, and together they joined the fight against the invasion.
