According to HUR, a car carrying Andrii Korotkyi, who was working as the “head of security” for Russian occupation authorities at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, exploded in the nearby Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar on Oct. 4.
Russia seized Enerhodar and the nuclear power plant in March 2022, and Ukraine has accused Moscow of using it as a tool for nuclear blackmail and endangering its safety. The car explosion occurred at around 7 a.m. local time, as shown in a video released by HUR. Yusov stated that Korotkyi is believed to have died in the blast.
HUR described Korotkyi as a collaborator who was involved in war crimes and repression of Ukrainians under Russian occupation. He had been cooperating with the Russian authorities, providing them with lists of plant employees and identifying pro-Ukrainian citizens. He also organized events in support of the Russian army and held positions in the ruling United Russia party and the Russia-installed town council in Enerhodar.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has experienced multiple blackouts since its occupation, with eight complete blackouts reported by Energoatom, the state nuclear energy company. On Sept. 15, Ukraine’s National Resistance Center reported that Russian forces were using the occupied plant to deploy military personnel and store ammunition and explosives. The IAEA has been criticized for allegedly ignoring this information.
