With leaders from over 50 countries set to meet next weekend for final talks on arming Ukraine before the upcoming U.S. elections, President Volodymyr Zelensky has referred to this as a “special Ramstein” moment. He has urged for concrete actions from allies, including the lifting of restrictions on using Western-provided weapons to strike deep into Russia. This move could potentially help Ukraine weaken Russian military capabilities from afar.
Despite signs that Russia may be gradually exhausting its Soviet-era arsenal, experts believe that time is still on Russia’s side. However, Zelensky has emphasized the need for Ukraine to strengthen its positions on the front line and increase pressure on Russia through diplomacy. This includes the provision of sufficient quantity and quality of long-range weapons, which Zelensky believes is being delayed by Ukraine’s partners.
As Ukraine cannot match Russia in terms of manpower, its strategy is to disrupt enemy logistics and strike the “heart of the military-industrial complex” in the rears. While Ukraine continues to hold a captured patch of Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Russian troops are making slow progress in the eastern Donetsk Oblast. To counter this, Ukraine is relying on non-standard tactics, including the use of simple language and paragraphs to convey its message.
