**Tbilisi State University Lecturers Fired for Supporting EU Protests**
Two lecturers from Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Law have been fired. Associate Professor Giorgi Tsertsvadze and Professor Irine Kherkheulidze were active supporters of pro-EU protests.
The lecturers’ dismissal has sparked criticism from opposition figures. One leader, Irakli Kupradze, called the action “severe” and “criminal”.
**Government Pressure on Dissenting Voices**
This development comes amid what critics describe as increasing government pressure on dissenting voices. A day earlier, a university in Tbilisi revoked student status from some protesters who were fined GEL 5,000 for protesting inside the building.
The Georgian Ministry of Defense has also dismissed several staff members, citing changes to the Civil Service Law. Many of those fired had signed a petition supporting Georgia’s European path and opposing the government’s decision to suspend EU accession talks.
**Mass Dismissals**
About 400 civil servants have been fired from state institutions since amendments to the law on Civil Service and pro-EU protests. This has led to criticism that the government is persecuting those who disagree with its policies.
