In the northeastern Sumy district of Ukraine’s Richky community, Russian forces used a drone to drop an explosive device on a passenger bus, according to the Sumy Oblast Military Administration on Oct. 5. This resulted in three civilians being injured and the bus being damaged. Sumy Oblast shares borders with Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts. In the past 24 hours, Russia has attacked 12 communities in Sumy Oblast, launching a total of 61 separate attacks. The targeted communities include Mykolaiv, Khotin, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Richkivka, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Shalyhyne, Esman, Svesy, and Seredyna-Buda. The region has experienced at least 108 explosions, with Russia using mortar, artillery, guided bombs, and drones to attack the border communities throughout the day.
These strikes have intensified since Kyiv’s cross-border incursion into neighboring Kursk Oblast in early August. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this incursion has helped prevent the occupation of Sumy Oblast and its regional center, the city of Sumy.
