According to US Ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, a group of five Republican senators expressed concern about Hungary’s increasing ties with Russia and during their visit to the October 5th. The delegation, which included Senators Jerry Moran, John Boozman, Susan Collins, , and John Hoeven, raised concerns about Hungary’s deepening relationship with Russia and the erosion of its democratic institutions.

Delegation leader Jerry Moran stated that both the delegation and their colleagues Congress are worried about Hungary’s growing cooperation with China, despite warnings from allies. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has maintained a pro-Russian stance since the invasion of Ukraine, opposing sanctions and blocking military aid to Ukraine through Hungarian territory. While Hungary has accepted and formally condemned the invasion, Orban’s actions have raised concerns about Hungary’s alignment with and EU interests.

Orban has also been strengthening economic and diplomatic ties with Russia and China, including energy deals and allowing Huawei to establish a major logistics center in Hungary. The senators called for closer cooperation between the US and Hungary, stating that it is in both countries’ mutual interest. They urged Hungary to listen to the warnings of its allies.

The report also mentions former US President and Republican Donald Trump’s favorable comments about Orban. Orban has openly supported Trump, causing criticism from the US embassy. In July, after the NATO summit in Washington, Orban met with Trump at his Florida villa and discussed his “ mission” regarding Ukraine.
