**Poland‘s President Wants US Nuclear Weapons**
The president of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has again asked the US to put nuclear weapons on Polish soil. He believes it will make Poland safer and stronger.
President Duda says Russia is a threat to Poland. He calls Russia’s actions in Ukraine “aggressive” and “murderous”. He also accuses Russia of moving its nuclear weapons closer to Poland and Ukraine.
Poland wants the US to base some of its nuclear weapons in the country as a response to Russia’s actions. This would be seen as a provocation by President Putin, but President Duda sees it as a defensive measure.
**A Defensive Measure**
President Duda believes that putting US nuclear weapons in Poland would make America more committed to protecting Poland. He also welcomes French proposals to extend their nuclear umbrella to other NATO countries.
Poland already hosts around 10,000 American troops at any given time. The country spends nearly 5% of its national income on defense, the highest percentage among all NATO members.
**Polish Prime Minister Calls for More Defense Spending**
Last week, Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, called for further increases in Polish defense spending. He also suggested that Poland should consider getting involved with nuclear weapons.
President Duda is confident that the US has a plan to encourage Russia to act reasonably. However, he does not criticize President Trump or question his commitment to NATO’s mutual defense clause.
President Duda backs calls for the EU to seize Russian assets worth around 200 billion euros that are frozen in European banks. He believes this money should be used to support Ukraine and help rebuild the country after Russia’s aggression.
