U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Steve Witkoff. Rubio said the talks were “promising,” but acknowledged the challenges in ending the ongoing war.

Rubio spoke on CBS’s “Face the Nation” about the ‘s plan to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine. He outlined two-phase approach: first, get both sides to stop fighting, and second, negotiate a lasting .

The secretary said that the priority is to achieve a ceasefire before starting broader . However, he admitted that even this would be difficult due to the complexity of the battlefield and competing interests.

Rubio remained cautiously optimistic about the negotiations and emphasized that President is committed to ending the war. He highlighted the need for engagement and concessions from both sides to achieve a lasting peace.

The secretary concluded by saying that the war must end, and is doing everything he can to make it happen.
