New Broadcasting Law to Affect Some Online Media
The new Law on Broadcasting in Georgia will have an impact on some online media. According to Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the Georgian Dream and majority leader, this law will apply to websites and social networks that belong to broadcasters.
In other words, if a website or social network is part of a broadcaster’s online presence, it must follow certain rules set by the new law. But not all online media will be affected. Mdinaradze said that online media in general will not have to comply with these rules.
The new law aims to make sure that journalists and broadcasters follow certain standards. Before, they were responsible for policing themselves. Now, a separate body called the National Communications Regulatory Commission will take on this role.
Mdinaradze clarified that the British Standard, which is an international code of conduct, will also apply to websites and social networks belonging to broadcasters. However, online media in general will not be subject to these rules.
