Georgian has chosen Manuchar Kakochashvili as -judge member of the High Council of Justice. This body is charge of watching over the courts.

Kakochashvili’s appointment comes after a court case that was decided on March 12. The Tbilisi City Court ruled in favor of Kakochashvili and cancelled an earlier decision made by President .

The earlier had appointed Kakha Tsikarishvili as a member of the High Council of Justice. However, the court found that this appointment was not done properly according to the .

President Kavelashvili’s office said that they reviewed the case and agreed with the court’s decision. They stated that there were procedural violations in the way Tsikarishvili was chosen.

Tsikarishvili had been appointed as a non-judge member on July 15, . But Kakochashvili, who was also a candidate, challenged this appointment. He claimed that the selection committee was unfair and that Tsikarishvili wasn’t questioned enough about his qualifications.

The court agreed with Kakochashvili’s claims and suspended President Zurabishvili’s decree on July 22, 2024. This meant that Tsikarishvili couldn’t take up the position.

President Kavelashvili has now appointed Kakochashvili to fill this position for a four-year term.
