**EU to Give Ukraine 5 Billion Euros for Ammunition**
The European Union is planning to give Ukraine 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) worth of ammunition, said EU diplomat Kaja Kallas on March 20. This amount is less than the 40 billion euros ($43 billion) package that still lacks agreement among EU members.
**Why the Smaller Amount?**
Kallas called the smaller amount a “realistic plan” that can be achieved sooner. The larger package of 40 billion euros has been discussed, but some countries like Italy, France, and Spain are hesitant to agree on it. This is because each country’s contribution would need to be based on its gross national income (GNI), which is a point of contention.
**Ukraine Needs Help**
The US, the main military donor, may not provide as much support in the future, making European assistance even more important for Ukraine. The 5 billion euros worth of ammunition will help Ukraine get 2 million large-caliber rounds.
**EU Leaders Meet to Discuss Support**
European leaders are meeting in Brussels for a two-day summit to discuss how to support Ukraine and increase defense spending. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to address the summit online on March 20.
