Cuba has asked to be included in the BRICS as a “partner nation” in an official message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 8.
BRICS is a grouping of emerging economies that includes Russia, China, India and Brazil.
In a post shared on the official account of the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s X page, Carlos M. Pereira said that Cuba had officially requested to be included in the BRICS group as a partner country’.
Viktor Koronelli, the Russian ambassador to Cuba, told TASS (the Russian state agency) on October 7 that Havana had officially applied for a BRICS partnership.
Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran joined the international organization in 2024. This was the first expansion of the group since December 2010, when South Africa joined.
Diplomats from BRICS have promoted the “partner country” status as an alternative to full membership for countries of the Global South.
Cuba asked to join the organization in 2023 as a full-member but did not get a positive reply.
The Caribbean island nation ruled by the communist party for decades has deepened its cooperation with Moscow due to their shared rivalry against the U.S.
In June, Russian warships docked briefly at Cuba as a possible demonstration of strength for Washington, who has supported Ukraine against Russian invasion forces.
