Pope appoints Ukrainian Bishop to College of Cardinals

Pope Francis announced on October 6 that Bishop Mykola Bychok of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Australia was appointed to the College of Cardinals.
The College now has 142 members, from the 120 that was the previous limit. The College of Cardinals’ main responsibility is to elect a new pope in a process known as the conclave.
Mykola Bychok, a Ukrainian-born bishop, will be the youngest member of the College when he is inaugurated. He will also be the only cardinal to come from his . He will be 44 years old and have the chance to influence the College for many decades.
Along with Bychok, Pope Francis also nominated twenty other new members of the College. Their inauguration will take place on December 8.
The majority of the new members hail from South America, Pope Francis’ native continent. One member is from North America. New members also represent Asia and Africa, which is a theme that has recurred throughout Pope Francis’ pontificate.
Analysts say that although he didn’t nominate the Kyiv based head of Ukraine’s Greek Catholic Church his decision reflects an understated political message, as Ukraine prepares to face its harshest winter since Russia’s full-scale started in 2022.
The second largest Christian denomination in Ukraine is Greek Catholicism. The Greek Catholic Church is primarily found in the western part. Less than a tenth of Ukraine’s population is Greek Catholic.
It has many of the same rituals and practices as Orthodox Christians.
