Russian forces used precision-guided munitions to attack a Kherson School, where a radio-protection shelter was being constructed underground.
A Russian air strike in southern Ukraine’s central district of Kherson has injured 18 people and caused significant damage, including to schools, to civilian infrastructure.
War crimes have been committed by Russian forces for using guided bombs to attack civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. These precision-guided weapons allow Russian forces strike targets more accurately than artillery or rockets. The Russians control a part Kherson Oblast. Their proximity to Ukrainian controlled territory allows them to terrorize civilians and disrupt daily life by launching constant strikes.
Four guided aerial bombs were dropped on the city centre on the morning of the 7th October. According to Roman Mrochko of the Kherson City Military Administration, the bombardment damaged two educational institutions and a number of multi-story residential buildings.
According to Kherson media, one of the bombs hit a school where construction on an underground anti-radiation shield has been ongoing for more than a month. The publication reports that a bomb struck the school building and could have saved workers at a nearby construction site.
The strike is directly associated with the construction of the shelter, indicating that locals think the project was targeted.
Nine women and six men were injured, with ages ranging from 32 to 75 years. Two children aged between 3 and 5 years old were also injured.
One person received medical attention on the spot, while 15 others were hospitalized. A man, aged 18, sought medical attention for leg lacerations caused by mine-explosive injuries. He will continue his treatment as an outpatient.
According to reports, the air strike also damaged at least six nearby apartment buildings, shattering their windows and damaging their facades.
The UK intelligence highlights that the UN reports a 20% increase in civilian casualties from February to March 2024, with 604 people affected by Russian missile and aerial attacks.
