The women‘s organization of the party “Gakharia for Georgia” has spoken out against the abolition of the Gender Council. They see it as a move to harm women’s rights and silence their voices.
The group says that getting rid of the Gender Council is not just a simple decision. It shows that the ruling party, “Georgian Dream“, does not care about women’s equality. In fact, they are trying to make things worse for women in Georgia.
In the past, “Georgian Dream” got rid of gender quotas for parliamentary lists. This meant that fewer women had a chance to be elected and take part in decision-making. Now, they have abolished the Gender Council too. This council was supposed to help develop policies on equality, stop violence against women, and give more power to women in politics.
The statement from “Gakharia for Georgia” says that this is not the first time “Georgian Dream” has worked against women’s rights. They are worried about what this means for women in Georgia. The country already has a big problem with femicide (killing someone, especially a woman, because of their gender). Women have little power and no strong protection from the state.
The statement concludes that abolishing the Gender Council is not just a small change – it’s a choice that shows “Georgian Dream” wants to make things worse for women in Georgia. They are weakening women’s voices and ignoring their needs.
