Georgian Law May Monitor Email Correspondence
Nona Kurdovanidze, head of the Georgian Young Lawyers‘ Association (GYLA), has spoken out about a new law passed by the government. The law, called Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), may allow for the monitoring of email correspondence.
According to Kurdovanidze, under FARA, individuals who send emails to more than two people may be required to submit drafts of their messages to the Anti-Corruption Bureau within 48 hours. This means that anyone sending an email with multiple recipients would have to share a copy of the message beforehand.
Kurdovanidze explained this in a social media post, saying that any registered entity, including individuals, could be subject to monitoring if they send emails to more than two people. She wrote that before sending such an email, a draft would need to be submitted to the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
This law was passed by Georgian Dream, and Kurdovanidze has expressed concerns about its implications for individual freedom.
