**Missing Persons in Former Yugoslavia**
A conference in Belgrade was told on Thursday that about 11,000 people are still listed as missing after the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
The presentation of a missing persons database showed that around 40,000 people were initially listed as missing during the 1990s. The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) organized the presentation.
**Database and Search Efforts**
The ICMP has created a database with 11,275 names of missing persons. Authorities in countries affected by war are working to identify hundreds of remains found in mass graves.
According to Samira Krehic, ICMP program chief for the Western Balkans, the regional database allows for new cases to be added and existing ones updated. Updates are sent to all parties involved in searching for missing persons.
**Importance of the Project**
The project is important because it treats all victims equally, said Veljko Odalovic, head of Serbia‘s Missing Persons Commission. The database will help in searching for missing people and presenting the difficult legacy of the region.
