At a joint press conference on October 7 with his Slovakian counterpart Robert Fico, Prime Minister Denys Smyhal announced that Kyiv and Bratislava had begun to work on creating an Energy Hub in order to strengthen the security of energy in Eastern Europe.
According to Shmyhal, Slovakia is now the second largest country in terms both of emergency and commercial electricity exported to Ukraine.
“We want Ukraine’s winter to be a good one. Fico confirmed that in the event of a blackout we would provide emergency energy supplies.
The new energy hub envisages using existing gas storage facilities as well as cooperation in the nuclear energy field.
Ukraine and Slovakia also plan to implement a joint project for the modernization of the Mukachevo – Velke Kapusany electric interconnector. The project is expected to be completed before the end of 2028.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister said, “As a consequence, we will expand export and import capacities and strengthen the security of energy in both countries.”
According to the Foreign Ministry of Slovakia, Slovakia will also allocate 500,000 Euros ($548,000) to Ukraine’s energy requirements and the restoration of its energy infrastructure.
Shmyhal confirmed Kyiv would not extend the transit agreement for Russian gas signed in 2019. The deal is currently set to expire on December 2024.
In 2022, Russia will cut back on its pipeline gas transit into Europe, but countries such as Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania remain heavily dependent on Russian imports.
“We understand that some countries, notably Slovakia, are extremely dependent on this resource. “But we are counting on gradual diversification of supply,” he added.
Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of both countries, said: “We will be able to expand our export and importing capabilities and increase the energy security for both countries.”
The operation was ordered and carried out by Navy Commander Oleksii Nezhpapa. The operation was secretly planned and “successfully executed” in a short period of time, according to a statement.
