Satellite imagery published by website Proekt shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin demolished his residence in Sochi, a city near the . This was due to the increasing concern over Ukrainian attacks.
Proekt claims that Putin has “stopped flying to Sochi for fear of his own safety.”
The images are dated May 2023, and May 2024. They show the site where Putin’s dacha Bocharov Ruchey was demolished.
The dacha was a favorite retreat of Putin and a frequent stop for him. Kremlin data showed that he spent 37 days per year at the property. He hosted foreign dignitaries, and celebrated personal occasions with Alina Kabaeva and their children.
The increasing frequency of drone strikes by Ukraine in the Sochi Oblast during the past year seems to have changed Putin’s habits.
Proekt quoted a source who described herself as “knowing Putin”. “Putin’s last flight to Sochi was seven months ago.” He broke a longstanding tradition by not coming to Sochi in May to celebrate Alina’s birthday.
The demolition of Bocharov-Ruchey marks a major change in Putin’s daily routine. During the -19 epidemic, he was said to have isolated himself in the dacha.
The Kremlin did not comment on the reports.
This is in line with Putin’s reported “paranoia” about assassination efforts since the invasion in Ukraine in 2022. He has reportedly reduced his travel obligations and prefers armoured trains when possible.
