The decision of Georgia’s Constitutional Court to not suspend the Russian law is without legal basis, ignores the legal conclusions of both local and international experts and represents a betrayal of Constitution by the judges.
According to a non-governmental statement, the court had an historic opportunity to oppose the suspension the European integration process. It could also prevent the government from gaining access to private information about citizens. And it could stand up for its own people who, despite government violence and for months, have defied Russian laws.
“Unfortunately, the Constitutional Court failed to make an independent judgment, again coming under the influence of ruling party, and failing to fulfill its function – protection of Constitution.
Georgian media and nongovernmental organizations have thanked the two judges for their dissent. They continue to fight authoritarianism in Georgia and censorship.
We will continue to fight against the Russian law, both in the country and at international institutions. With the support of the Georgians, we will achieve its unconditional and final abolition”, reads the statement.
The Constitutional Court has not granted the request for suspension of the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”, although it acknowledged that the lawsuits were admissible to review.
