In a recent press release, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, highlighted the EU’s significant progress in reducing its dependence on Russian energy. She highlighted a 90% reduction in oil imports.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, most EU countries have diversified their energy sources to reduce their dependence on Russian fossils fuels. According to UkrInform, Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission has stated that not all countries have reduced their dependence on Russian fuel.
RePowerEU, Europe’s energy reset program, was adopted by the EU after the Russian war against Ukraine began.
This program includes energy-saving measures and the development of infrastructure for energy interconnection among member states. It also prioritizes domestic energy production by investing in renewable energy.
Last year, the EU’s oil imports from Russia fell by 90%, and as a result, the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels dropped by 71%.
“Let me speak to those who still think we should depend on dirty Russian fuels. Only days after Russian tanks invaded Ukraine the European leaders met in Versailles. All 27 leaders agreed to diversify their supplies and eliminate Russian dependence on fossil fuels as quickly as possible. What have we achieved after 1,000 days? Europe has diversified its sources, but not all have followed the Versailles commitments. One member country in particular sought alternative sources instead of looking for alternative sources.
She reminded us that the EU, on the other hand, built infrastructure and established ties with new partners. The Europeans have achieved significant success by investing in the development of cheap and clean energy. In the first half this year, renewable energy produced in Europe accounted for 50% of Europe’s total electricity consumption.
“Russia has repeatedly shown that it is not an dependable supplier. There are no excuses in this case. Those who want to truly ensure energy security in Europe must contribute first. “This is a rule that we must follow,” said the European Commission President.
Hungary and Slovakia had been granted temporary exemptions to the EU’s sanctions on Russia.
Mol Nyrt, a Hungarian energy firm, will be launching a new product in September 2024. The agreement was announced to continue the supply via a pipeline that passes through Ukraine of Russian crude oil.
