According to an announcement made by Roskomnadzor, the internet regulator, Russia has banned Discord, a popular platform for communication widely used by its military to coordinate operations in Ukraine. The Washington Post reports that the decision has sparked criticisms and renewed debates on technological shortcomings within Russian Armed Forces.
The ban has revealed that the Russian military has failed to implement a secure communications system, produced in-house, more than two and half years after the full-scale war in Ukraine. Instead, troops have relied on privately-owned platforms such as Discord or Telegram for battlefield communication.
