The Ramstein format meeting regarding Ukraine’s defence may be postponed due to US officials canceling their visit because of Hurricane Milton‘s approaching US.
Suspilne, citing an official in the Office of Ukraine’s President, reports that the upcoming meeting of Ukraine Defense Contact Group (also known as Ramstein) may be delayed as leaders’ schedules will be coordinated.
This follows the decision by US President Joe Biden to delay his visit at the Ramstein meeting to Germany due to Hurricane Milton‘s approach to the United States.
Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, responded to Biden’s decision by saying that the meeting would have been “very important” and that preparations were being made “on all sides.”
Pentagon reports that the meeting at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on 12 October could be combined with the NATO Defense Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for 17-18 Oct.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, had announced that he would be preparing a comprehensive victory plan for the meeting in Ramstein. The plan also included obtaining approval to use long-range weapons on targets in Russia.
Yehor Cherniev, vice chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, said to RBC-Ukraine, that during the Ramstein Group meeting, the West may lift restrictions on striking deep into Russian territory.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also canceled plans to travel to Germany for the meeting on October 12. Miller explained that Blinken will be heading to Vientiane in Laos to represent the United States during the East Asia and ASEAN/UN summits.
The Ramstein format brings together international partners in order to coordinate additional assistance to Ukraine. The meeting on the 12th October should have been a first-in-person gathering for leaders in this format.
President Joe Biden will likely skip a Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland next month in favor of attending a California fundraiser with Hollywood stars.
