SEU, the Georgian National University in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT), has taken the initiative to support entrepreneurship education through the MIT Entrepreneurial Center, Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, and its ‘Raise the Bar Entrepreneurship Educators Network’. MIT was founded in 1861 and is the world’s most prestigious technology university. It consistently ranks first in the QS World University Rankings. It is also recognized as a pioneer in launching a number innovative startups that have contributed to the development entrepreneurial talent. The Martin Trust Center provides mentorship to budding entrepreneurs. In an interview, Gia Kavtelishvili (rector of SEU) discussed the goal behind the entrepreneurial education program. Georgia, he says, lacks a consistent education for entrepreneurship. But the world of today is accelerating and requires such professionals. The Network aims to develop a generation of entrepreneurs with the skills necessary to navigate critical challenges. Universities within the network share a similar goal: integrating MIT’s experiences, especially in startup generation, into the international arena. SEU’s membership in this prestigious group allows it to collaborate with other leading educational institutions around the world, creating an environment for information exchange. SEU sends five academics to MIT each year to take part in entrepreneurship programs. This helps to develop the academic staff. This initiative allows them to familiarize themselves with MIT’s accelerator programs and the new content provided by MIT’s faculty. These professors are able to effectively share their knowledge with SEU students, as they have new information. SEU must facilitate relationships that will allow students to participate in fully funded exchanges at MIT. They can take part in the ‘StartMIT’ three-week immersion program that teaches practical skills in entrepreneurship. They can also attend seminars led Bill Aulet, the director of the Martin Trust Center, a best-selling writer, and learn from him. “This partnership gives SEU students an opportunity to learn the latest trends in entrepreneurship and participate in international projects. It also allows them to establish global connections,” Kavtelishvili explains. Such experiences will benefit their startups and impact the overall ecosystem in Georgia. SEU’s administration staff attends MIT’s annual conference. In collaboration with partner universities in the network, SEU will introduce an international accelerator on its campus. This accelerator will be integrated into both master’s and bachelor’s programs. SEU, as one of the founding members of the Raise the Bar Entrepreneurship Educators Network will have access to the MIT Orbit Platform, a digital platform designed to help startups develop by identifying critical risks and maximizing outcomes.
