Ana Tsitlidze is a member of parliament and chairperson of the Zugdidi branch “Unity-National Movement”. She has made serious allegations against Levan mebonia, director of the Enguri hydroelectric power plant (HPP). Tsitlidze alleges that Mebonia was actively involved in a plan to suppress voter registration among internally displaced people (IDPs), by confiscating their ID cards and negotiating to close the Enguri Bridge with Russian occupiers.
Tsitlidze said that Mebonia instructs Enguri HPP workers, especially those who are opposed to the government to surrender their ID cards in order to prevent them from voting in the upcoming election. She also accused Mebonia, of negotiating with Russian troops to close the Enguri Bridge between October 24 and 26, which would prevent IDPs from the occupied territories to cross into Georgian-controlled zones to vote.
“We know the people who are involved in the confiscation of ID cards and other illegal activities. Levan Mebonia is one of them. He is the director of Engurhesi and has been accused of two crimes. Levan Mebonia is responsible for confiscating the ID cards of many Enguri HPP members who are in opposition so that they can’t vote on election day. Levan Mebonia’s second, more serious crime is that he is the main negotiator between the Russian occupiers and the Enguri Bridge to close it on October 24, 25, and 26 so that IDPs (Georgian citizens from the occupied territories) are not allowed to vote.
She also urged the employees of the Enguri HPP, assuring that they would be protected from retaliation. Tsitlidze also noted that “Georgian Dream”, has begun efforts to confiscate the ID cards of citizens in the region with opposition political leanings. She expressed confidence, however, that most citizens will resist these attempts despite fear of losing social assistance.
As I mentioned earlier, “Georgian Dream”, started the process of confiscating the ID cards of citizens in the region who had questionable political choices. We receive daily information. The good news is the majority do not give their identification cards to representatives of the “Dream”. They are socially vulnerable, and they fear that if they don’t hand over their cards, they will lose their social assistance. But it is impossible that the “Georgian Dream”. “To have enough resources to take ID cards away from the entire Zugdidi, Samegrelo, and the entire Georgia”, said Ana Tsitlidze.
