The country’s Parliament has approved legislation allowing foreigners and stateless people to hold officer posts in the country’s security services and armed forces.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a new law that allows foreigners and stateless people to hold officer positions within the Armed Forces and National Guards as well as the State Special Transport Service.
This new legislation builds on a previous law, passed on the 20th of August, which addressed legal status for foreigners and stateless people fighting on Ukraine’s behalf. This earlier law allowed these individuals to obtain temporary residency permits or immigrate even if their documents were expired and to regularize legal status in Ukraine.
The law amends the law No. The law 12023, which deals with military service contracts for stateless and foreigners, was approved by the parliament on 10 October.
Liga claims that the changes are intended to address the challenging situation at the frontlines by increasing the army’s size. According to the note explaining the law, the military intends to bolster their ranks not only by mobilizing but also by recruiting volunteer soldiers, especially those with military experience.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, announced earlier plans to grant citizenship to foreign volunteers who serve in the Ukrainian Defense Forces. This would also include their families. He said that this was applicable to “Ukrainian Legionnaires” who are members of the Ukrainian International Legion but do not hold Ukrainian citizenship.
