Michael Roth, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the German Bundestag expressed his gratitude to all political parties who supported the resolution passed by the Bundestag on Georgia. Roth stressed the importance of the upcoming Georgian elections on October 26. He said that the Georgians face a crucial decision between joining the EU and being isolated, as well as deciding between democracy or totalitarianism.
Roth wrote on the social media platform X: “Thanks to our colleagues in ‘Light,’ and CDU/CSU for their clear commitment towards a democratic, European, and free Georgia. On October 26, Georgians will decide if they want to be part of the European Union, or isolated from it, or if they want democracy or totalitarianism.
The resolution, entitled “For the European Future of Georgia,” received the support of the German Bundestag. It highlights concerns regarding Georgia’s current policy direction. The document warns against the authoritarian, anti-European government of Georgia putting the country’s European Future at risk. It also highlights that laws such as the “Transparency Of Foreign Influence” Law are incompatible with Georgian aspirations to become a member of the European Union.
The resolution also criticizes Bidzina ivanishvili’s influence as honorary chairman of “Georgian Dream“, the ruling party, and suggests that maintaining his power seems to take precedence over the country’s European future or democratic stability.
