In the Russian military industry, these machines are used to produce vehicle parts and ammunition.
According to ARD’s Tagesschau, a German public broadcaster SWR investigation aired 10 October 2024 revealed that German industrial equipment continued to reach Russia despite EU sanctions. This could have aided its military production capability.
The EU has imposed sanctions against Russia for its full-scale invasion in Ukraine, focusing on key sectors such as finance and defense. As a response, Russia uses complex schemes and third-party countries to evade the sanctions. The EU has tightened its measures, criminalizing evasions and enhancing export control.
Investigations revealed that in 2023, more than 300 machines capable to manufacture vehicle parts or ammunition had been delivered to Russia. These deliveries were often made through third countries such as Turkiye. These deliveries are said to be important in Russia’s efforts, despite ongoing sanctions, to maintain its military capability.
Olena Yurchenko, from the Economic Security Council of Ukraine, said that 80% of CNCs in Russia are used for military production today.
“With computer-aided CNC machine, they can produce faster and more accurately, which is very important in the weapon sector.” They can produce even more deadly weapons.
