light of the current situation regarding Georgia’ European integration, and the many obstacles that are it back, the of the Weimar Triangle released a statement on 10 October reaffirming support for the democratic aspirations and European aspirations expressed by the people. The letter’s concerns about the Georgian government and its actions, as well as the possible consequences for the country’s EU goal, highlight the importance of resolving this pressing issue.
Below is the complete statement:
We, the foreign ministers of the Weimar Triangle reaffirm that we support the democratic and European aspirations expressed by the overwhelming majority in Georgia.
We regret the actions of Georgian government that have led de facto halting of Georgia’s process of accession to the European Union. This was declared by the European Council, which represents the Heads or Governments of 27 EU Member States on 27th June.
The negative trend has worsened ever since, with the emergence of the “Transparency law” which stigmatizes non-governmental (NGOs) that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad, and labels them as serving the interests of foreign powers, the recent adoption of legislative amendments restricting the rights of LGBTI individuals, and attacks on civil- groups and independent journalists.
We are also increasingly concerned by the increasing aggressive rhetoric directed at the EU and its Member states. The EU will not tolerate Georgian authorities spreading false narratives about European policies and positions.
We urge the Georgian Government to change its current course. At stake is the scope and depth of EU and Georgia relations and cooperation.
We expect that the Georgian authorities will ensure that the upcoming are fair and free, and will follow the OSCE ODIHR’s recommendations. This includes the ability to conduct a safe and free electoral .
We hope that the Georgian Government will recommit to implementing the reform priorities defined by Georgia’s EU candidate country status. We are ready to continue to support the Georgian society in its journey towards a European Future. Our hands remain outstretched.
We are committed to strengthening Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international recognition within its borders.
