The Mi-8 medium helicopter was designed in the 1960s, and first introduced to the Soviet Air Force by 1968. The Russian production of this aircraft model will continue until 2024, for both military and civil use.
The Kharkiv front remains a crucial front in the ongoing conflict due to its strategic position bordering Russia and as a possible launch point for further offensives.
The Ukrainian military reported that Russian losses totaled 63 killed and injured military personnel, three destroyed artillery system, two armored fighting vehicles, a Mi-8 helicopter, 14 drones, and four vehicles.
In this direction, Ukrainian forces destroyed three artillery systems and four vehicles as well as two units of special equipment.
On 13 September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian Forces had stopped the Russian military’s advance in Donetsk Oblast and in the Kharkiv-direction.
Vitaly Sarantsev said that the Ukrainian Defense Forces had strengthened their positions in Lyptsi, Kharkiv Oblast, on 18 September.
The Kharkiv Operational and Tactical Group of Troops announced on 23rd September that between 10 May and 21 September 2024 the Russian occupying forces in Kharkiv lost over 16,000 soldiers.
The National Guard reported, on 4 October, that Ukrainian fighters had “captured 7 Russian positions and destroyed a PTRC location and a howitzer” during an offensive operation in Kharkiv Oblast.
A Russian Mi-8 helicopter that went missing on the 31st of August was later found in Kamchatka, in Russia’s Far East. All 22 people on board, including 19 passengers, 3 crew members and the helicopter’s pilot, died.
Western sanctions have affected the Russian aviation industry by limiting access of spare parts and maintenance for civilian and military aircraft. It’s not clear whether these sanctions contributed directly to this incident, since the cause of the disappearance of the helicopter is still unknown.
