Several months back, these infantrymen served their sentences in prison. They are now part of the 1st Separate Assault Battalion (also known as “Da Vinci“). The Kyiv Independent spent the day with this unit to learn what motivates ex-prisoners to become soldiers, and what challenges their command faces when trying make them effective fighters.
